This week: Porter Sq canvassing, MassAve4 meeting, CDD bike ride

A child bikes up a curbside bike lane as people stand along the border, forming a human barrier protecting the bike lane.

Thursday March 3, 6-8PM: City of Cambridge Meeting, “MassAve4” Bike lane Project

On Thursday March 3rd, 6-8pm, there’s a city meeting about other stretches of Mass Ave that will be getting bike lanes, south of Porter Sq down to the Cambridge Common, and north of Porter Sq from Beech to Dudley St. (the “MassAve4” segments). You can register here and learn more about the project here.

Friday March 4, 5:30-7PM and Saturday March 5, 11AM-12:30PM: Canvass for Protected Bike lanes in Porter Square

Join us on Friday and/or Saturday in letting people in Porter Square know about the Porter Square Safety Improvement project, including its scope, benefits, and rationale (increasing safety, which is badly needed!). You won’t be on your own—you’ll be joined by experienced volunteers who will help train you.

What: Canvass for Protected Bike Lanes in Porter

Why: The recent discourse on protected bike lanes in Porter Square has included some false or misleading claims, leading to calls from some to amend the Cycling Safety Ordinance and seriously delay protected bike lanes in Porter Square and along Mass Ave. You may have seen some fliers to this effect in Porter Square recently.

When: Friday, March 4, 5:30-7pm; Saturday, March 5, 11am-12:30pm

Where: Meet at Somerville Ave. and Mass. Ave. (across from Passage of India).

We’ll keep the fun going on Friday night by meeting up at Cambridge Common afterward (Social outing on Saturday TBD).

New to canvassing? We’ll show you how it’s done!

“I don’t usually like talking to strangers, but it felt really great seeing people’s eyes light up when I asked, “Do you want safe bike lanes [here]?” and telling them about the campaign.”

—Susan, a bike safety volunteer, on her experience canvassing
