Last night the Council voted to continue installation of the Broadway separated bike lanes as planned!
Thank you to the 187 people who spoke last night in support of safer infrastructure, the hundreds of people who wrote the council, and more than 1,600 people who signed the petition in support of the Broadway separated bike lanes. So many volunteers handed out fliers, reached out to residents, and helped organize our turnout and response, and we are so grateful for your energy and dedication.
We are deeply grateful to (in alphabetical order) Councilor Azeem, Vice Mayor McGovern, Councilors Nolan, Siddiqui, and Sobrinho-Wheeler, who voted to continue the project on schedule.
The positive mitigation policy orders that were led by Councilor Siddiqui and co-sponsored by Vice Mayor McGovern, Councilors Nolan, Sobrinho-Wheeler, and Azeem were passed by the whole council. We thank these sponsoring councilors for putting forward creative solutions to address concerns about the project.
Here’s how the other Councilors voted on the two policy orders to respectively cancel and delay the Broadway separated bike lanes:
- PO to cancel Broadway: Mayor Simmons and Councilors Toner and Wilson voted to cancel the project altogether. When that failed, they voted for delaying it.
- PO to delay Broadway: Councilor Zusy voted against canceling the project, but supported amending the Cycling Safety Ordinance to delay the project indefinitely until 200 parking spots were found. It is not clear if that number of parking spots is even available. Mayor Simmons and Councilors Toner and Wilson also voted for this indefinite delay.
Again, thank you to everyone who shared your support with the Council!
